Tunis, March 24, 2008 (TunisiaOnline)--Researchers from the universities of Yale and Columbia in the United States , have ranked Tunisia as 59 th country in the world for its “environmental performance index” (EPI). Tunisia stands out as first in Africa and in the Arab World in the 2008 edition of the EPI, with an overall score of 78,1%. The first three countries in the world according to the index, are respectively Switzerland , Sweden , and Norway .

The 2008 Environmental performance index, ranks 149 countries in the world on 25 indicators tracked through 6 established policy categories: environmental health, air pollution, water resources, biodiversity and habitat, productive natural resources, and climate change. As a gauge of pollution control and natural resource management results, the index provides a strong tool for improving policy making and shifting environmental decision making onto firmer analytical foundations.
