ZAGHOUAN

PDF Print E-mail
zaghouan06Its location is as impressive today as it must have been in the 2nd century CE. Above it rises the 1,295 metre high Zaghouan Mountain, and in front stretches the fields. You may almost see the Mediterranean Sea on a clear day.
Its decoration has similarities with what you would find in a temple. There are 12 niches each having a life size statue representing the 12 months of a year. In the middle there was really a temple, of which only the central niche remains.
The basin below the platform is shaped like the figure of 8, and served to filter the water before letting it on to the aqueducts. The best remains of the aqueduct are found near Oudna.

Practicalities

HOTELS AND ALTERNATIVES

There is one hotel and a youth hostel in town. The hotel closed a few years with the promise to open soon. The youth hostel is very basic.

RESTAURANTS AND ALTERNATIVES

Good simple food around town. If it is open, you can eat in the hotel.

NIGHTLIFE

Nothing.

CHANGE MONEY

There are a few banks in town, that will give you the usual service of exchanging foreign currencies, or give cash for your VISA or MasterCard.

TRANSPORT

Despite being a town of some size, Zaghouan is not an important transport hub. Few things start or end here – buses and shared taxis pass through. This gives you sometimes problems with finding a free seat, but everything will work out if you avoid the most popular times of travelling (holidays, weekends).
